ABSTRACT

The Didache is the earliest example of a Church Order which we possess. This genre of early Christian literature included instruction for community organization, teaching, prayer and praxis. The prayers presented below are for the community's eucharist or Lord's Supper. Though the precise date for the work as a whole eludes us, the prayers and the ritual they imply are among the earliest known. The text is of enormous significance for the study of the development of Christian liturgy. Parallels between these prayers and rabbinical Jewish prayers have long been noted. The resolution of the extent and meaning of these parallels is of great import for the study of Christian- Jewish relations at the time this text was compiled.
