ABSTRACT

The Pedagogue of Clement of Alexandria was written in Greek around 190 CE in Alexandria in Egypt, one of the most important and learned cities of the eastern part of the Roman empire. The work consists of three books. The hymn occurs at the end of the third book, forming a poetic conclusion to the work which is otherwise prose. The hymn is the only known poetic creation by Clement, and, more importantly, one of the first examples of such poetry in an early Christian ambience.
