ABSTRACT

The Phōs Hilaron is a Christian vespers hymn of great antiquity. Used in the eastern Church from about the third century, it went unnoticed by Christians in the west until the seventeenth century, when it was translated into English. Since that time it has been used in a wide variety of hymn collections spanning a variety of Christian traditions. The Phōs Hilaron is an excellent example of the enduring quality of ancient Greek hymnody for modern Christian liturgy.
