ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some of the processes gone through by a small-scale theatre company in putting on a production of the play and providing workshops for a secondary-school audience. It was a new company with no public funding and a new pool of theatre workers. Jacques and His Master is a play by Milan Kundera, translated into English by Simon Callow. The play is the story of Jacques and his Master who are travelling through life. Forum theatre was one of the techniques of the theatre of the oppressed–a tool for spotting and combating oppression. Forum theatre is where the audience after watching a play are invited to watch it again, this time not as passive audience members but as active onlookers. Various projects have since grown out of Jacques and His Master, in particular a national forum theatre tour, Invisible Theatre projects and a new play on bullying.
