ABSTRACT
Throughout most of Portuguese territory during the period ranging from c. 2700–2500 to c. 1800–1700 bc 1 there emerged communities which created new kinds of relationships between the elites and their populations. Such new ‘behaviour’ has to be linked to a global change in the traditional ideology of power. In some areas, tendentially hierarchical societies took steps towards a quite significant level of social complexity.
