ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the evolution of the research design, the nuts and bolts of data collection and analysis. It explores some of the changes occurring within experiential art therapy groups which are part of postgraduate education in art therapy. Bibliographic searches revealed an absence of research on experiential art therapy groups. Most of the literature on art therapy groups is general and describes authors’ clinical work, addressing issues such as structures and boundaries and the appropriateness of differing approaches for varying client populations. The research literature on group therapy is considerable. In the art therapy group questionnaire there were therefore ten items on group interactive behaviour and six items on art work, all of which asked for self- and other-perceptions. The chapter illustrates a procedure for the collection and analysis of quantitative data in art therapy groups and presents the findings, but does not describe the research process in its entirety.
