Whispers from the forest: the excluded past of the Aché Indians of Paraguay

During one of my visits to an Aché group, which had emerged from the forest only a few years previously, I learnt that it had taken the Indians a year to acquire the confidence to speak normally again. For some 20 years prior to their emergence, a period of constant fear and flight, they had tried to avoid detection by speaking only in whispers.
