ABSTRACT

What Polish schoolchildren learn today about prehistory depends chiefly on the history syllabus laid down in the national curriculum, and this in its turn depends greatly on the textbooks currently in use. It is these textbooks that shape teachers' attitudes towards prehistory and how to present it to children. It is, therefore, of some importance that the textbooks currently in use in different countries be compared and analysed from the perspective of prehistory. Some initial attempts to do so have already been undertaken by assessing the illustrations used in textbooks in Europe (Mikołajczyk in press).
