ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Many primary schools are now teaching languages, and some have been doing so for many years. Language is closely linked to identity: developing children’s knowledge about language (KAL) and their language skills will help learning across the curriculum. Languages are often seen as a means of enriching the curriculum and as a way of responding to diversity within our society and preparing children for participation in an increasingly globalised world.
