ABSTRACT

Latino/a or Hispanic is a term used to define a very diverse ethnic group. The definition of Hispanic or Latino origin used in the 2010 Census is: Hispanic or Latino refers to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. A liberation health model of working with Latinos is primarily based on the principles of liberation psychology. In the case of the large numbers of Latino migrants who are presenting with psychosocial issues in emergency departments or primary care practices in health centers or hospitals, providers need to be well versed in the profound impact of the US immigration system on their lives. Liberation Psychology analyzes migratory phenomena in terms of power, and advocates for the transformation of societies at all levels as a means of promoting social justice and conditions of wellbeing for all social groups.
