ABSTRACT

The authors of this book tell a common evolutionary story, one in which a field of research grows – from infancy to contender in exploring how we come to know in a social domain, and from its world of simple descriptive scholarship to one of mature scholarly inquiry and analysis. The purposes of this chapter are to comment on this story and to place the narrative in a larger context regarding how research knowledge grows and how it is used, and to suggest directions for the future of research in the arts and special education.
