ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about the process of finding the compound in order to refind the body. In alchemy the phases of solutio and coagulatio dissolve concretized qualities associated to male and female. From the alchemical text Splendor Solis we learn these two processes were spoken of in terms of Woman and Man, or Milk and Cream. Queer is the essence of a third, which defies definition of either gender, as in the Rosarium the baby as the third comes after lovemaking, but we do not know the sex of the child. Queer, once considered an insult, has emerged as a linguistic sign of a fluid sexual identity in the making. It is both an affirmation of gender neutrality and resistance to such classification. Clinical work suggests there is more to Queer than body politics. For Audrey, the battle between her sexual body and gender identity as an honorary boy created a fire-breathing chimera.
