ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an interactive approach to unearthing student's abilities. The students expressed that while participating in the dance programme, they felt 'free' to express themselves. Dance can make a difference in engaging children and young people in creative activities, which can make development and learning much more enriching and fulfilling. In Jamaica, dance is a part of the physical education curriculum, but many teachers are afraid to teach this aspect of the curriculum as a subject because of non-interest or lack of training. It is an excellent form of exercise for any growing child. Dance experiences encourage children to listen and be creative and responsive to various rhythms, which also helps in the thought process. It is generally understood that persons who are involved in structured activities such as dance tend to be more focused, organised, better able to reason and good problem solvers.
