ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the weakness of trust relationships between staff and students. Work intensification for staff has been a feature of Higher Education (HE) for some considerable time and staff too has been subject to alienating forces that privilege the transactional outputs, over the relational. Among the many strands that lie behind the notion of partnership is 'student voice'. This concept has emerged through two contrasting approaches. The first approach is both pedagogical and political and is derived from work over the last century about broader education. The other approach to student voice has less of a pedagogic character, although it does have a political element. There are few strands of work that do address the teaching and learning environment more explicitly. The first arose out the Centres of Excellence for Teaching and Leaning (CETL) initiative between 2005 and 2010. The second strand is concerned with initiatives that invite students to come forward with ideas to improve teaching and learning.
