ABSTRACT

This chapter presents engagement journeys of three students who have taken on leadership responsibilities within the different schemes. Student representation, specifically the Student Staff Committee (SSC), has been instrumental in implementing changes to Combined Honours (CH). The mentoring scheme focuses on the social integration of first years into university life and the CH degree specifically. The predominant focus on students' social integration in our scheme means mentors often feel uneasy about fulfilling mentees demands for academic advice. The creation of the PASS scheme, based on Peer-Assisted Learning models, tries to combat several issues. The overriding focus of the society is to provide opportunities for students to socially integrate away from the academic university setting. Mentors plan and deliver activities on Induction Day within their mentor groups, helping to create cohesion and friendships among mentees. Throughout the academic year, mentors hold informal meetings which cover practical issues relevant to new students.
