ABSTRACT

Perceptions of engagement between students who progress onto university varies greatly. Gazing around lecture theatres showed a distinct difference in the attitudes of students; those playing on phones and those people don't bother to turn up on a regular basis evidently had a reduced engagement in their studies. There are many factors which have affected both my own and other student's engagement during university. Distractions such as social networking, part-time working and invites to go out and meet friends seem much more appealing than a 2000 word essay, which can always be done tomorrow or the day after. Going to university is a new stage in anybody's life, particularly as for many students it is the first time they have lived independently away from home, cooked meals, washed clothes and travelled to their place of education every day on their own accord, including waking up and getting yourself out of bed.
