ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book aims to bring China into current debates about association between urban form and household Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. It contributes to the planning and development of low carbon cities by examining not only urban household travel behavior and its related carbon emissions but also how emissions vary in cities with different urban forms and districts. Four case-study cities were deliberately selected: two on the coast, one in central China and another in western China. The spatial layout of case-study cities represents both monocentric and polycentric configurations of urban space. In addition to macro level analysis of configurations of urban spatial structure, urban form is considered at the micro level using measurements of land-use mixes and provision of public transportation. A questionnaire survey was administered in case-study cities, and the data were analyzed applying the same methods to each city.
