ABSTRACT

The learning study model was developed by a research group at the University of Hong Kong and at the Hong Kong Institute of Education. The idea was publicly presented for the first time in a lecture given by Ference Marton on 27 November 2001. Design Research results in the development of practical design principles for teaching, together with contextualized theories of learning. We took Japanese lesson study as our point of departure, but introduced a particular theory of learning developed mainly in Sweden over several decades, and elaborated further in Hong Kong as a basis for our work, as well as systematic pre- and post-tests, aiming at publishable forms of reporting. So what is to be learned are things that the students have not yet learned, but that are necessary for attaining particular educational objectives. It has contributed many teachers creating more powerful conditions for their student's learning and will hopefully lead to doing so even more in the future.
