ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how the digital nudges delivered via timely information, questions, and behavioral interventions to the learner's smartphone have been able to engage, motivate, and support math students to greater success. It explores the literature for an understanding of best-use possibilities of mobile learner support technologies for K-12. To help students stay on task in a discipline that they found challenging, and in a format that would test their self-regulatory skills, University of Washington (UW) Tacoma collaborated with Persistence Plus (P+), a mobile platform service that delivers interactive and personalized learner support messages to student's mobile phones. The challenge of designing effective m-learning support systems is that they have to take into account research-based elements that constitute successful interventions in non-mobile realms and interpret them for mobile platforms. The importance of parents and school-home association on English-language learning (ELL) student outcomes has been substantiated.
