ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the ways that help children to find the mathematics in their out-of-school lives and to make connections between this and the mathematics that they engage with in the classroom. The discussion of Bell in 2013 relates to the fact that school learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects is different for different children depending on their constructions of science, mathematics and scientific and mathematical thinking gained through their out-of-school experiences. The children are asked to use mobile technologies to document their out-of-school lives and to use the artefacts they create in the classroom to broaden their understanding of what mathematics is. The project described used documenting to bring children's out-of-school contexts into the classroom. In terms of the barriers between classroom and out-of-school learning, the project did indeed show that a mobile learning approach can help address some of the barriers between home and school.
