ABSTRACT

This chapter examines survey research, which is a technique that has been used extensively for studying the effects and impact of online and blended learning. Of all the research methods, survey research is perhaps the most familiar to the general public because it is used for many purposes by the mass media and other organizations. As applied to survey research on online and blended learning, response rates can vary depending upon the subjects and the nature of the questions. In smaller-scale survey research involving students and faculty, response rates vary depending upon the nature of the questions. The surveys administered by the Babson Survey Research Group had high response rates from senior administrators in the higher education community but somewhat lower rates in K-12 school districts. Survey research has established itself as a most important methodology in the social sciences, including teaching and learning and the use of educational technology.
