ABSTRACT

The issues faced by Mexican American students in American schools over the past fifty years or more have continued to worsen without adequate responses by K-12 school districts, or by colleges and universities. One of the states with a large Mexican American student population is Texas. According to the Texas Education Agency, of the 4,978,120 students in Texas schools during the 2011-2012 academic years, Mexican Americans accounted for 50.8 percent or 2,530,789 students. This makes Texas a majority-minority state. Texas has always shared this border and the problematic issues for Mexican Americans in the Texas educational system have persisted through the years. The American educational system should be concerned with providing an equal educational opportunity to all of its children. Mexican Americans have been, and will continue to be a large part of our country. Only with equal opportunities, respect, and validation will this population be able to contribute in positive ways.
