ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book attempt to understand rights from a 'relationship' perspective and how despite living in a world of 'contract' and 'services' we strive to provide enabling environments to young children within early years settings. Children's participation has primarily been addressed through programmes and researches involving 'children's voices'. It focuses on children's participation, which according to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child(UNCRC), entitles children to express their views in all matters affecting their lives through various forms of expression, including oral, writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of the child's choice. Children's participation has primarily been addressed through programmes and researches involving 'children's voices'. The book acknowledges the situated nature of childhood and the authors are aware of the scope, possibility and limitation of participatory approaches.
