ABSTRACT

This chapter presents case study of Radio Wnet, a radio station turned social network and citizen consortium as well as a site of diverse social and media-related initiatives. It outlines the media landscape in Poland and introduces research showing a fall in the level of public trust the Polish media enjoy. The chapter discusses the origin of Radio Wnet, along with its legal and organisational structure and its ideological profile. It presents analysis of the functioning and contents of the radio's channels. The theoretical framework for the analysis utilizes the notions of access-interaction-participation 'producer', 'prosumer' and 'conducer', all of which are applied here in the context of the production and consumption of media. The chapter describes the notion of community in the context of the social group revolving around Radio Wnet and the social actions this group undertakes, to conclude with a summary of the challenges faced by the station in the near future.
