ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a case study of Radio Ambulante, which serves as one of the best recent examples of how crowd funding can be used to launch a new radio broadcasting venture. It is partially based on a series of in-depth interviews conducted with Carolina Guerrera, executive director and co-founder of Radio Ambulante. Radio Ambulante is a good example of how the new possibilities for financing and distributing quality audio content can be creatively and successfully exploited. It offers an emerging business model that not only takes full advantage of digital convergence and the multiple platforms now available for the dissemination of journalism but is also geared towards making the production of digital content financially viable. Radio Ambulante's production manual sets out a series of specific guidelines for the production of every programme. Radio Ambulante is global, digital and Web based: the three main characteristics that companies need to prosper in the new economy.
