ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a new tool for measuring teacher leadership. It provides the foundational literature development of the tool, Teachers' Perception of Teacher Leadership Survey. The chapter discusses the impact of teacher leadership and future research opportunities. A fair amount of the inconclusiveness of quantitative studies on teacher leadership and student achievement possibly stems from survey development. The Teacher Leadership Model Standards and two existing surveys informed the development of our survey items: the Leadership Capacity Staff Survey and the Leadership Development for Teachers Survey. Cultivating teacher leadership has become a popular school improvement strategy to meet the goal. An indirect relationship means that teacher leadership may be linked through others factors with student achievement. The chapter concludes with the need for research on teacher leadership and also presents a theory-driven, quantitative survey instrument to be used in future research.
