ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the characteristics of a teacher leader and examines the impact of teacher leaders on individual students, colleagues, and communities. Teacher leaders display the kinds of behaviors exemplified here many times throughout the school day. Teacher leaders are teachers who transform a learning community—one child, one teacher, one classroom, one school, and one district at a time. Every school has teachers who stand out: the teachers whom colleagues, students, and other staff members gravitate toward; the teachers who display their commitment to their students, school, and district in both action and word. The chapter provides a story from a different school. Mrs. Crowthers shared her success about Janie in a staff meeting. She did it in a way that conveyed to colleagues that anyone could motivate struggling learners and that what she did was just what all effective teachers do.
