ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides a range of scholarly perspectives on the background, context and implications of the introduction of the offence of squatting in a residential building under section 144 of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 (LASPOA 2012). It explores the themes relating to the landowner, the law and the policy of adverse possession and the protection of private property. One significant theme has highlighted the climate of political crisis in which the British Government conceived of, drafted and pressed through the LASPOA 2012. Dadusc and Dee extend the theme of rhetorical manipulation in their analysis of the deployment of hysterical media coverage in generating moral panic regarding squatting and squatters, drawing on their comparative study of England and Wales and the Netherlands.
