ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we analyze a focal firm's use of non-employed human resources on time-limited contracts, who cooperate and work together with standard employees. Starting with Atkinson's (1984) model of the flexible firm, there has been extensive research on various types of employment relations. The emphasis has been on atypical employment arrangements characterized by short-term contracts that constitute alternatives to long-term, open-ended employment relations. Such arrangements include people leased from other firms such as external consultants and contractors who often work on the premises of the focal firm.
