ABSTRACT

Multiculturalism is an official policy in a lot of countries where cultural diversity and pluralism is under government guarantee and protection. They are two different models of integration within the framework of multiculturalism but share two important characteristics: a secular, liberal democratic polity and Muslims as a dominant religious minority. In emphasizing group rights, multiculturalism presents itself as a form of cultural determinism that curtails citizen's freedom of choice. The policy of cultural diversity in India ensures that all citizens keep their identities, and multiculturalism is expected to give each citizen a feeling of security and self-confidence, and serve as one of the most important social and economic attributes. In practice, multiculturalism is already perceived as a reality due to the diversity of the modern societies, the rights they acquired and the values they established. The official motto of the European Union is united in Diversity.
