ABSTRACT

Urban areas in India are experiencing exponential growth in population and this phenomenon is likely to continue in the nearfuture. Urban sprawl in different directions is creating problems of mobility leading to congestion, delay and frustration for commuters. The conventional public bus services are unable to cope with the demand especially in the metropolitan cities. Therefore, many cities are planning expensive metro rail systems of different types to manage the demand. Needless to say these are time-consuming and expensive projects. Even metro rail systems need to be connected with feeder bus routes, and such a transfer is always associated with issues such as revenue sharing, co-ordination and routing and scheduling of rail and bus routes. Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is used in many countries to provide speedy mobility to urban commuters. This paper deals with the merits of BRTs in improving mobility through public-private partnerships (PPP). This approach enhances urban mobility with less resources to the exchequer; it also ensures ease of coordination between the agencies associated.
