ABSTRACT

International migration increasing in the past decade and is one of the most visible outcomes of globalization. Migrant workers have largely contributed to the bustling economies of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The GCC countries, the major destination for most labour migrants from Asia sector, affected by the crisis through the decline in oil-price but have also experienced high financial losses from the financial crisis. Migration has a long history in Asia. Historically, the movement of people was associated with the rise and the decline of empires. Many countries are in need of in-migration for demographic and economic reasons. Although the majority of temporary labour migrants are generally men, the number of women migrants has been increasing in the past decade. The nature of the work of the majority of migrant women makes them particularly vulnerable, since domestic work is not covered by the labour law of most destination countries in the GCC and in Asia.
