Punjab is one of the most prosperous and developed states among the major states of India. It has the lowest poverty incidence and ranks second in terms of human development index (HDI), next only to kerala. As per the 2001 Census, about 66 per cent of state's population and 70 per cent of its workforce live in rural areas.
