ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a community of Haitian immigrants living in a rural area of the Dominican Republic. Little research has assessed the role of football in the Dominican Republic, where baseball receives much more attention because of its popularity across the country. This work contributes to the literature on football and migration by assessing the importance of football to Haitians and through focusing on migrants who are not professional athletes. The chapter discusses issues such as staging and performing identity and understanding sense of place, and examines notions of exclusion pertinent to ethnicity and gender divides within a particular locale.
