ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the ongoing globalization and the need for coordination and collective action from international organizations. Globalization fundamentally changes the nature of interaction from the domestic level to the international level. The chapter then explores on the development of intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and their variant roles in addressing different global issues. This chapter focuses on four imminent challenges for the human race: the proliferation of nuclear weapons, pandemic diseases, population policies, and helping the poor. It explores on these four issues in order to show how international organizations endeavor to solve global issues. The chapter specifically discusses the intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations that are endeavoring to respond to these four issues. This chapter explains the indispensable role that international organizations play in this ever-integrating world. The first known cases of Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) occurred in Guangdong Province, China in November 2002.
