ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the Swedish case and gives glimpses of research on older immigrants and care workers with immigrant backgrounds. It focuses on the context of care - a context that gives insight into society's moral and political life as well as its relationship with others. The chapter presents demographics for contextualisation purposes. The work of care managers in Sweden is guided by legislation and by organisational and municipal prerequisites. The legal foundations for needs assessment are found in the Social Services Act. A facet of immigrant policy was introduced in 1975 when Sweden declared its intention to become a multicultural society and decided that future immigrant and minority policy-making would strive for equality, freedom of choice and partnership. Care workers with immigrant backgrounds, are regarded as 'Others' because they are assumed to have innate caring skills which make them attractive to the Swedish elderly care sector.
