ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the main trends of cattle ranching development in the Brazilian Amazon, which is the main activity supporting landholders production strategies. It also offers a comprehensive review of the magnitude of these trends by adopting a wide regional approach. Finally, the chapter reviews the main factors explaining the expansion of cattle ranching in the Brazilian Amazon, according to different perspectives and describes contemporary policy, and institutional and economic development taking place in the Amazon aimed at reducing the expansion of ranching over forestlands, and assesses implications not only for land-use change but also for economic benefit sharing.
