ABSTRACT
In response to the persistence of authoritarianism in the domestic political landscape, Turkish political actors have devised various techniques for political survival. Generally, these techniques involve the establishment of informal institutions that allow key political actors to survive at a time in which they otherwise have no capacity to change the formal rules of the game. The institution of emanetçilik (proxy leadership) is one of the most prominent of the numerous survival tactics to have emerged in the Turkish context.
