ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses current environmental challenges faced by China's electronic information industry. It provides an overview of the status quo of China's information and communication technology (ICT) industry. The electronic information industry, also known as the ICT industry, is the backbone for the development of informatization and building an information society in China. ICT is one of the most important tools for China to achieve its committed targets of reducing CO2 emissions and build a low-carbon society. As a fairly new concept emerged in the West, it is hard to find a universally accepted definition of Green ICT. The immediate benefit of implementing Green ICT is to reduce environmental impact and polluting emissions of the ICT industry. The chapter has proposed the use of Green ICT as a strategy to reduce pollution and carbon footprint during design, production, use, and disposal of ICT products.
