Standards 1-3 are about understanding the stated and implied meaning of the text and being able to sort out its central ideas from the supportive details. These are the skills of reading that most teachers already think of when they work toward comprehension. Although these Reading Standards are already in place, the difference in the Common Core lies in the increasing level of complexity in the text.
