ABSTRACT

In this chapter we describe a popular culture course developed for second language undergraduate students taking a foundation (General Education) course and hosted by the English Department of the City University of Hong Kong. By way of three case studies, and with reference to the content of the students’ work, we illustrate how the students engaged in a process of critical analysis based on topics they chose for their projects. We also show how these learners dealt with issues such as culture, agency and language when presenting and analyzing selected topics of popular culture. We maintain that the enhanced insights and literacy skills students obtained from taking this popular culture course are transferable to other learning experiences, and ultimately to their personal and future professional lives.
