ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with training for the motivational enhancement therapy (MET) arm of the trial. The task turned out to be a greater challenge than originally anticipated, though responses to training varied a great deal. Individual members of staff from the agencies selected for the UK Alcohol Treatment Trial (UKATT) were requested to express an interest to practise in the trial. During the three days designated for MET training, in addition to familiarisation with trial procedures, trainees attended lectures and discussions on the evidence base for motivational interviewing and Motivational Enhancement Therapy, where the aim was to assure trainees that they would be offering the best possible treatment to clients. Therapists also stated that the specification of session content prevented them from getting sidetracked, helping them to maintain focus on the subject of motivation to change drinking. Topics for the four core Social Behaviour and Network Therapy (SBNT) sessions were: communication, coping, relapse prevention and management and enhancing social support.
