ABSTRACT

This chapter describes findings from the analysis of Motivazione Al Cambiamento 2 - Alcool (MAC2-A) results in a sample of 419 Italian adults. While additional research and in-depth studies are needed, broadly speaking the findings is consistent with previous research and with clinical experience. It describes the detailed design and methodology used to validate MAC2-A, rather to draw out some key findings and discuss the practical implications of taking a multidimensional view of the nature of motivation. In the authors' view, the clinical usefulness of a multi-dimensional model is based on the ability to integrate an evaluation of readiness, self-efficacy and discrepancy into a single, easy-to-administer tool which more accurately reflects components of motivation to change. The chapter presents the interpretation of the data, which is intended as an aid to clinicians and in particular to suggest some refinements to the application of the stages of change model and the use of motivational therapies.
