ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a fourth motivational enhancement therapy (MET) protocol for pregnant women, the training and supervision approach. It outlines what the authors have learned in each of these training domains and provides the reader with recommendations of how to maximise training impact for clinicians trying to learn motivational interviewing (MI). The chapter explores detailed guidelines for rating competence for all items in the authors' monitoring system to help the supervisor provide individualised feedback and coaching. The authors' protocol involves the use of MI as part of the standard intake assessment process. Since the aim of an MI session is for the clinician to build and strengthen the client's motivation for change, authors consider any movement upward on the scale a potential indicator of good MI proficiency. The psychotherapy field as a whole also has emphasised the importance of determining how specific clinician training efforts impact the acquisition of specific clinical skills.
