ABSTRACT

Applied performance measurement is the collection and use of judgments, ratings, perceptions, or more objective sources of information to better understand the performance of a person, team, unit, business, process, program, or initiative in order to help guide subsequent actions or decisions. It may involve collecting measures of behaviors or actions, outcomes or results, competencies or attitudes that provide insights about performance. Applied performance measures can be gathered via questionnaires or rating forms, interviews, or observations. They may also be based on data from archival records or system-generated reports. The chapter examines a performance management system. Performance management systems are one of the most common applied measurement systems in organizational settings. Performance management systems, often centered around a performance appraisal process, are typically used to make performance-based organizational decisions about people and/or to enhance employee development. Applied performance measurement efforts have implications for assessing, guiding, and remediating organizational effectiveness.
