ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of various innovations developed in the United States for the assessment and treatment of the driving-while-impaired (DWI) offender. It presents a few examples of innovative approaches that have been implemented to reduce recidivism and provides more effective treatment for the first-time and rearrested offender. Central States Institute of Addiction (CSIA) operates one of the largest DWI programs in the country. It is located in Cook County, Illinois, which includes the city of Chicago. Central States Institute works in conjunction with the Circuit Court of Cook County and the Department of Human Services Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. Services include a structured, comprehensive, and individualized alcohol and drug evaluation, recommendations to the Court, and monitoring and tracking of the offender. The program representative provides assessment results and recommendations as testimony to the court.
