ABSTRACT

Philosophy, when just escaping from its golden pupa-skin, mythology, proclaimed the great evolutionary agency of the universe to be Love. The movement of love is circular, at one and the same impulse projecting creations into independency and drawing them into harmony. Natural selection, as conceived by Charles Darwin, is a mode of evolution in which the only positive agent of change in the whole passage from moner to man is fortuitous variation. Three modes of evolution have thus been brought before us; evolution by fortuitous variation, evolution by mechanical necessity, and evolution by creative love. We may term them tychastic evolution, or tychasm, anancastic evolution, or anancasm, and agapastic evolution, or agapasm. Internal anancasm, or logical groping, which advances upon a predestined line without being able to foresee whither it is to be carried nor to steer its course, this is the rule of development of philosophy.
