ABSTRACT
One of the distinguishing features of the family as a subject of social discourse is that it is easy to define: everybody knows what ‘the family’ is. This universal understanding is attributable to the fact that the vast majority of people come from, and are members of, families. In other words, it is due to the importance of the family as a basic unit of social life.
