ABSTRACT

Group analysis draws upon psychoanalytic, sociological and systems theory perspectives. From psychoanalysis it takes the setting and the boundaries, the Freudian unconscious, transference and counter transference, notions of internal object relations, unconscious fantasy, psychic defence, all of which manifest in current relationships. Group members were encouraged to respect the time boundaries and to risk more open communication than was habitually theirs. The general practices and counsellor were perceived in the group transference as a ‘couple’ with an intimate and exclusive relationship. Both felt that this transference was also expressed by members of the general practice personnel. Supervision of the group work was offered fortnightly and has become less frequent as the therapists gained confidence. However it is important to note that both therapists brought considerable experience and relevant skills to the project.
