ABSTRACT

The dictionary states that impulsive acts are uncalculated, the result of sudden urges or desires. Conversely, delayed gratification or self-control suggests the calculated resistance to temptation. Individuals are said to have the trait of impulsiveness if impulsive acts occur often enough to interfere with important long-range goals. Impulsive behavior is a societal concern when the results are viewed as damaging to the individual or to the larger community, as in the cases of drug addiction, obesity, unwanted pregnancies, etc.
